Artist Statement

Illustration

Through my work I explore the intersection of classic and contemporary fantasy, drawing inspiration from the immersive worlds of board games, video games, and literature I consumed growing up. By rewriting traditional fantasy tropes, I aim to create more inclusive narratives surrounding queerness, disability, and the Jewish identity. Influenced by the work of artists such as Eliot Baum, Alan Lee, and Junji Ito, I aim to create and challenge conventions of fantasy, reshaping the portrayal of ideals like gender, body, and character archetypes. In order to do this, I use vivid colors and dramatic costume design inspired by drag, as well as use inspiration from my community for character representation. By focusing on these elements, I create spaces where minority voices and experiences are not just inspirations, but central to the narrative.

Ceramics

Through my work I explore the correlation between family and fantasy within the context of my own family of my mother, father, and I.By researching my own heritage, my work draws on distinctive features from both Romanian Horezu pottery and Delftware to emulate the experience I had in my grandparent’s home in Chicago. On dinner plates of varying sizes are paintings of swirling trees, roosters, and homes- themes that both appear in the aforementioned historical work as well as my own family. Our last name translates to “rooster” in Dutch. My choice of low-fire earthenware is essential to the work as well, calling forth ideas of Talavera (traditional Mexican pottery), a style absorbed by the art space in Texas in which I grew up.
The intersection of fantasy into the work therein becomes an investigation on how fictional stories and media became imperative to our survival as a small family, who encountered some aspects of outcast from their respective relatives. The narrative illustration, painted in blue to tie in the context of my jewish identity in the household, aims to represent different aspects of a family dynamic that have often been reflected in the fantasy media I consumed growing up. The topic of community, protection, and the hero’s journey appear in multiple facets.
By using these themes along with the choice to frame them against the backdrop of a wall, the plates’ functionality becomes something beyond a dinnerware set: a vehicle in which my family’s history and relationship can be viewed for those outside our small, condensed life.
